If a user has Administrator privileges, the user can interact with the Windows Firewall Notification message and directly add the application that triggered the notification message to the exception list. Whenever an application executes a TCP listen or UDP bind to a specific port, the network stack notifies Windows Firewall with both the application name and port number. If Windows Firewall is not running in No Exceptions mode and the application is on the exceptions list, the exception is automatically enabled and the port is opened. If the application is not on the exceptions list, however, a Windows Security Alert window opens and displays a notification on the user s desktop as shown in Figure 22-2. What is WPF First let s look at where it came from if you refer to Figure 1-1 in 1, Introducing Microsoft Visual C# 2008 Express Edition, you ll see that WPF was added with the arrival of .NET 3.0 and shipped with Windows Vista. What is it WPF is a unified programming model that allows developers and designers to build Windows applications that incorporate rich media (sound, video, and so on) and documents. WPF uses your graphical processing unit (GPU) via a technology called DirectX, which is a software platform and technology used mostly for games and other graphical-intensive applications. Programming applications directly with DirectX is not easy, and WPF uses the capabilities of DirectX without the need for you to learn them. With WPF, you have the ability to develop richer applications by using the full power of your computer instead of relying only on your central processing unit (CPU). With WPF, developers and designers are able to work together to come up with highquality applications; you probably have seen what WPF will let you do in big Hollywood productions such as The Net, Sneakers, Disclosure, 24, or Mission Impossible. For instance, do you remember in Disclosure the virtual glove database with its innovative explorer software Or how advanced the e-mail software was It s always fascinating to see how Hollywood presents software and how good it looks, but at the same how far it is from the reality. Well, it s now a reality because of WPF. Before we dig into the technicalities, I invite you to look at the videos on the Mix07 Web site that showcase WPF capabilities. Global exceptions apply across all interfaces, unless explicitly overridden for a particular interface, and they apply across all connected networks. Global exceptions can be created interactively, via scripts, during the installation of SP2, or by using group policy. When a program tries to access a restricted port and there isn t already an exception in place for that port, the default behavior is for Windows Firewall to open a dialog box and the user of the program is prompted to allow access to the port. If the user allows the exception, a global application exception is created that applies across all interfaces and all network scopes. This exception can later be edited to narrow the scope. To prevent this dialog box from appearing, clear the Display a notification when Windows Firewall blocks a program check box shown in Figure 22-3. To interactively create a global exception, perform the following steps: 1. Open the Windows Firewall dialog box shown in Figure 22-1. 2. Click the Exceptions tab as shown in Figure 22-3.
