The next tab in the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box is the WINS tab, which is shown in Figure 2-5 on the next page. This tab lets you configure the servers and settings used for WINS-based name registration and resolution. Aside from specifying the address of servers and the order in which to use them, there are two other key settings. The Enable LMHOSTS Lookup option determines what the computer will do if all other attempts to resolve the NetBIOS name fail. If selected, the computer will check a local file known as the LMHOSTS file. This file is sometimes used to create custom NetBIOS computer name-to-IP mappings. If LMHOSTS files are in use on a network and there is a centralized store for the custom LMHOSTS file, clicking the Import LMHOSTS button allows you to import the file. The NetBIOS Setting section determines whether or not NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) and WINS are used. The default setting is usually best. In pure Active Directory networks, WINS is not required.

Another entry in this registry location, IsDomainMaster, determines whether a Windows XP Professional based computer can become a preferred master browser. A preferred master browser has priority over other computers in master browser elections. Whenever a preferred master browser starts, it forces an election. The default setting for a Windows XP Professional based computer is False. Caution

Do not edit the registry unless you have no alternative. The Registry Editor bypasses standard safeguards, allowing settings that can damage your system or even require you to reinstall Windows. If you must edit the registry, back it up first.

The Options tab displays the single entry, TCP/IP Filtering. When you select this option and click Properties, the TCP/IP Filtering dialog box opens, as shown in Figure 2-6 on the next page. If you select Enable TCP/IP Filtering (All Adapters), you can then specify allowed and blocked TCP and UDP ports as well as which IP protocols are permitted for traffic destined for this computer. This is a security feature that allows you to block IP protocols and TCP or UDP ports that should not be used on the network. By filtering traffic that you don t need for communication, you also block the possibility of malicious users using those ports as access points to your computer.

Windows power management is based on the concept of power schemes. A power scheme is a group of preset power options that are passed to the operating system to control a computer s power management behavior. Power schemes are presented to the user in Power Options in Control Panel. The power policy used when the computer is powered by AC (utility) power can be different than the policy that is used when the computer is powered by a battery. Verify that the power schemes that are available are appropriate for the target user environments. The most useful power schemes for portable computers are Portable/Laptop, Presentation, and Max Battery. Using the default power scheme settings might not always be the best configuration. You might need to explore the best configuration for the user s needs.

All software and software components must be installed locally and run locally on portable computers. You must therefore make sure that you do not have any partially installed programs or distributed programs installed on a portable computer that is frequently used offline. Only Administrators can install software for personal digital assistants (PDA) because some PDA software cannot be installed by members of the Power Users group. Also, only members of the Administrators group can use the Internet Connection Wizard to configure an Internet connection.
