When you want your users to be able to view the most current data from your database on a Web site, you can create an Active Server Page (.asp) that fetches the data when the user opens the page. You can also create code in the page that evaluates parameters that the user can supply in the URL or that you can pass from another Web page to filter the displayed results. An Active Server Page fetches the data on the server, so the server must be able to connect to your database. However, an Active Server Page is very efficient because the server performs all the database processing and returns to the user only the data requested. In the \Webs\ActiveServerPages folder on the companion CD, you can find several Active Server Page examples. To be able to see how these pages work in a Web browser, you must publish them to a Web server and then fetch the page results using the server s Web address. You cannot open these files directly in Windows Explorer. If you are running Windows XP Professional and have installed and started Internet Information Services (IIS), you can copy the sample pages to your server s root folder to test them. You can find explicit instructions on how to do this in Defining a System Data Source, page 1001. You can see an interesting example of how to filter the results from an Active Server Page by opening the ResSearch.htm page from your server. This is a standard HTML page that includes a form to accept search criteria, as shown in Figure 25-11. If you have copied the pages to your local server, you can open this page by entering the address http://localhost/ ResSearch.htm in your browser s address box.

As you can see, the way we deal with namespaces in LINQ to XML is straightforward. In our first query, we build our fully expanded name (XName) by appending the element s local name to our XNamespace (slash). In the second query for the titles of the items in the RSS feed, we use just the local name (title) since it doesn t have any namespace associated with it. By combining the namespace and the local name into a single concept, LINQ to XML makes working with XML documents that use namespaces and namespace prefixes much simpler. Everything is wrapped up into a single concept and encapsulated in a single class, XName. That completes our quick tour of the key concepts within LINQ to XML. Throughout the next chapters, you ll see many examples of these key concepts, as well as how they can make your life easier when working with XML. Now let s jump into the class hierarchy itself so that we can see how everything we ve talked about thus far manifests itself in the classes and objects we ll use to build XML applications.

When you know the parameters that an Active Server Page accepts, you can also enter the parameters as part of the URL. For example, if you want to see all the reservations for facility ID number 3 in the month of July 2003, you can enter the following in your Web browser s address field:

You might have noticed the question mark at the end of an Active Server Page name followed by a long string of data in the URL of many Web pages that you visit. Now you know that the string specifies parameters that tell the Active Server Page what you want returned to your browser.

Before moving on to look at how we can use the LINQ to XML programming API to load, create, and update XML, we need to understand the major classes we ll be using. Fortunately, LINQ to XML has a relatively small hierarchy, and only a handful of classes that you ll work with day to day. The class hierarchy is figure 9.2 shows the major classes defined in the LINQ to XML API.

You can use data access pages to present data on the Web in a very attractive way. You can actually convert most forms and reports that you have created into data access pages and use the pages for your Web sites instead of just exporting your data as static HTML or creating an ASP page. In Figure 25-13 you see the rptFacilities report from the Housing database.
