Microsoft TCP/IP uses NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) as specified in RFCs 1001 and 1002, which define a software interface that supports name resolution for NetBIOS client and server programs in the LAN and WAN environments. Although DNS is the default name-resolution method for Windows XP Professional, NetBT is still provided to support NetBIOS methods of name resolution for clients running versions of Windows earlier than Windows 2000, and for Windows 2000 and later workgroups that do not implement Active Directory.

The following discussion describes the types of name-resolution methods that are available through NetBIOS over TCP/IP (including WINS) and contains procedures for configuring the different resolution methods.

RFCs 1001 and 1002 define the following four node types:

P-node. Uses point-to-point communications with a NetBIOS server (such as a WINS server) to resolve names.

Expense and availability HomePNA networks require HomePNA NICs and standard phone cabling. They are often sold as kits for around $50, so they are very affordable. You ll find plenty of manufacturers of HomePNA products at your local computer store. Easy. Windows XP can automatically install the NICs, and the manufacturer usually provides a setup CD. Networks are limited to 10 Mbps, which is considerably slower than Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet. Connecting the LAN to a shared Internet DSL or cable connection can require extra hardware. If you are still unsure about whether to use Ethernet or HomePNA, consider all the points in this section, and then revisit this simple idea if running Ethernet cable between computers and a hub is not a problem, use Ethernet. This way, you won t have any speed problems, and you ll have more residential gateway and router options than are provided with HomePNA.
