As mentioned above, one of the limitations of TVPs is that they are passed by reference. The TVP is materialized as a temporary table in the tempdb database, and when you pass it to a code module, you are actually passing a reference to that table. SQL Server manages it all for you, so unless you dig (or read the documentation!) you ll never know this. The code samples for this chapter include a TempDB.sql script that lets you explore this behavior, by displaying tempdb s sys.tables and sys.columns catalog views to list the structure of the TVP from within a stored procedure. Nevertheless, despite these limitations, TVPs do a remarkable job in reducing the amount of code that you need to write when you need to pass a set of data to a code module. They are probably among the best of the productivity features that Microsoft introduced in SQL Server 2008.
