Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007) includes two additional and very specialized lists. The first is the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) list. This list type displays the current status of quantifiable business measurements. KPIs range from monthly sales data to counts of the number of issues that come into your company s help desk and how many have been satisfactorily resolved. In addition to manually entered data, you can build KPIs based on data in other lists, Excel workbooks, or SQL Server. MOSS 2007 also adds a Languages and Translators list. This list works with the Translation Management workflow to assign translation tasks based on the languages involved.

While you can change the main part of the name, you cannot change the extension, which you can see defaults to .xml. If you were to select the option Edit in Browser, this XML file would look similar to the one shown earlier in Figure 10-37. Notice also that the drop-down menu has two Edit options for editing the data. If you use the first edit option to open a copy of the data file in your browser using Microsoft Office InfoPath, you can make changes to the data on the form and then click Save, not Save As, unless you want to create a second data instance with a new name. The second option lets you edit the data file using a copy of Microsoft Office InfoPath from your desktop. If you make changes to the data on the form using InfoPath, you must select Save from the File menu in InfoPath to save the data changes back to the data file. In either case, it may at first appear that the metadata for the data file does not update. Remember that SharePoint uses web pages, and you may need to click your browser s Refresh button before the metadata reflects changes made to the data.

Tip If you want to use the XML in another process, you can download a copy of the XML data file by using the file s drop-down menu and selecting Send to Download a Copy.

Now that you ve read through the descriptions of the many available SharePoint lists and understand the variety that SharePoint provides out of the box for those built-in lists, it s time to see how to create new list instances from these base lists and even add columns or views. The steps for doing so are common to all lists. You may have assumed that you can add list objects directly to the site home pages as shown in these earlier figures, but SharePoint only lets you add web parts to a site s home page. So how does a list become a web part You begin by instantiating or creating a copy of the list from a list template. Think of list templates as patterns used to make copies of themselves. If you take a template and stamp out a copy of that template, you create an instance of that template. For example, to create the announcements list you saw at the beginning of the chapter, you first navigate to the site where you want to use the list. Once there, open the Site Actions menu and click the Create option as shown in Figure 2-15.
