As Jeff Wilkins was assembling his skunk works at CompuServe in Columbus, a Virginia entrepreneur named William F. von Meister was pondering his next business move. The 36-year-old had recently been ousted from his position as CEO of a high-tech startup called TDX a company he had founded two years earlier. He was so good at selling ideas that, in his obituary in Washington Technology in 1995, a former backer was quoted as saying that von Meister could raise money from the dead. So, despite his business incompetence, von Meister made money enough to support eight children, a rambling mansion in suburban Virginia, and his hobbies. Coming as he did from a wealthy family tinged with royalty, he may have felt entitled to living well. He was certainly accustomed to it. His father, Friedrich Wilhelm Willy von Meister, was a godson of Kaiser Wilhelm II,

On the next page of the wizard, shown in Figure 10-27, it asks you to indicate whether you want users to fill out the form using a browser or if you want them to download the form and open it with a local copy of InfoPath.

Before beginning the process of publishing your form, you should have InfoPath verify that the form does not contain any features that browsers do not support. You can do this by selecting Design Checker in the Info page of the Backstage area. This command displays the Design Checker panel along with any incompatibilities with the selected server where you published the form. If you have not published the form yet, you can select the link Change Settings at the bottom of the Design Checker panel to open the Compatibility page of the Form Options dialog. Select if necessary the option Web Browser Form as the Form Type. To verify the compatibility of the form with InfoPath Forms Services on your specific server, enter the name of your SharePoint server in the text box in the Server Validation section. For example, I would enter http://vanguard for my server. When I save the form, InfoPath automatically adds the rest of the URL, transforming my entry to http://vanguard/_vti_bin/FormsServices.asmx. Click OK to accept your changes to Form Options. Finally, make sure to select the check box Verify on server.
