Netscape invented cookies as a means of keeping track of a user s session via the otherwise stateless HTTP protocol [RFC2109]. Operating systems and the 16-bit port numbers used in IPv4 place a hard limit on the number of usable sessions. The open source implementation of SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), openSSL, uses a session id to avoid the expensive re-negotiation of certificates, encryption algorithms, and encryption keys for connections re-established between the same client and server.
