Starting with the Black & White conversion method, various other techniques are then applied to create the final image: n The Background layer is converted to a Smart Object (Sammy) and a Smart Sharpen Smart Filter applied just to the eyes. This is achieved by masking off the rest of the image, leaving only the eyes showing through. n The Sammy Smart Object is duplicated and a wide Gaussian Blur of around 23 pixels is applied as a Smart Filter to the duplicate. Then its blending mode is set to Hard Light. This has the effect of boosting contrast and also adds a soft glow to the whole image. n Sammy s teeth are whitened a touch using a Levels adjustment layer. A layer mask is used to restrict the adjustment to just the teeth. The effect is quite harsh, so the opacity of the layer is reduced to 67 percent. n Last, a Levels adjustment layer is placed across the whole image just to boost the contrast a little more. This results in a slightly clipped highlight on Sammy s cheek, so the effect there is muted by painting a gray area onto the mask using a soft-edged brush and dropping the opacity of the whole layer to 39 percent.
