The only way that we can find out what performance to expect from our system is to test it in conditions as close as possible to the ones in which the code will run when in the production environment Every software application is unique In order to understand the performance of your own application, you must test it yourself, according to your own definition of performance In some situations, good performance will mean the ability to support a large number of users; in others (eg, when the user load is small), it will simply mean being able to run as fast as possible In this chapter, we describe a methodology that you can use to test the performance of your systems in a consistent way We also present tools that you can use to conduct.

For those of you who have never seen Struts, think of this as a crash course. If you understand a Servlet object, you will understand an Action class. The Action classes very much mimic the way a Servlet object looks. Listing 2-1 provides an example of an Action class.

Since we are going to use the same environment variables to work with the samples in the rest of the chapters, it makes sense to add these variables to the system properties. These environmental properties can be used as shortcuts to selected directories where we have installed GlassFish, Ant, and the source code for the samples. Once these environment variables are set up as system properties, we can refer to them as %JAVA_HOME%, %GLASSFISH_HOME%, and %ANT_HOME%.
