In general, you can do two things from the server console: enter commands to perform certain tasks, and load NLMs to add new functionality to your server. One of these NLMs, by the way, is NWCONFIG.NLM (see Figure 5-2), which can be used to configure various parts of your server.

Figure 5-2. NWCONFIG is one of the many NLM utilities available for server management. You can load an NLM just by typing its name. If, for example, you want to load MONITOR.NLM, just type the command monitor on the server console. This loads the module. In the case of MONITOR.NLM, you ll see a new screen in which the NLM displays its output. Some modules, however, do not show a new screen, but just get loaded. In order to unload an NLM, use the unload command followed by the name of the NLM. For example, you can unload MONITOR.NLM by issuing the command unload monitor. If the NLM in question displays its own screen, in many cases you can use the Esc key to exit the screen. After loading an NLM like MONITOR.NLM, you ll find that the normal console screen of your server is no longer available. In this case, you can use some key combinations to switch between the different screens active on your server: Ctrl+Esc: Use these keys to get a listing of all screens currently active on your server. Enter the number of one of the screens to activate it. (See Figure 5-3.) Alt+Esc: Use Alt+Esc to browse through the different screens on your server. Ctrl+Alt+Esc: Only use these keys if you have problems on your server and it isn t operating normally. They will display a small menu where you can choose from three different actions to safely shut down a frozen server in this regard, the option Down the File Server is particularly useful. The option Spawn new command line process is useful as well: it will give you a new command line that can be used to continue working on the server, even if some particular screen has hung.

You can define the policy type by using the policy_type parameter when you use the dbms_rls.add_policy procedure, as shown in Listing 5-20. Listing 5-20.
