We re going to dive into the guts of the thing here, so feel free to skip this if you re not deeply interested in how this works under the covers. One of the most obvious and trivial ways to generate random numbers using, say, the C programming language, is to use the standard C library function rand(). The rand() function uses a linear congruential generator to generate random numbers. That algorithm generates numbers that, when averaged and examined over time, seem random from a statistical standpoint. However, rand() is not a good function with which to generate numbers that are secure for use with cryptographic algorithms, because after some time, the random numbers generated by rand() repeat in a fairly predictable fashion.
